How to set yourself up for success in 2021

Time to become the healthiest and happiest version of you both physically and mentally. 

 

What a year 2020 has been. A year no one saw coming.

For some, it has been the big pause they needed; a chance to slow down and get clear on what they wanted.

For others, it has been the most challenging year of their lives: job loses, financial strain and grief from losing loved ones.

One thing is for sure; everyone has been impacted in some way.

There are a lot of events happening around us that we have no control of. However, by focusing on what we can control, we regain our power and take charge of how we want 2021 to look and who we want to become in the process.


Let's take a look at what we can do to ensure we set ourself up for success, by focusing on our circle of influence as we embrace this new world we will be living in.

 

Step 1 Prioritise your physical health

Exercise, nutrition, and sleep are all crucial for our wellbeing. We all know what we should be doing to get healthy. Move more, eat unprocessed foods and get enough rest.

So why are we living in a society where obesity, heart disease and type 2 diabetes are on the rise?

With all the information we could ever want just one click away, you would think that people would be getting healthier, but unfortunately, the opposite is true.

The good news is, getting in great shape and being healthy is less work than you may think.

Exercising for just 30 minutes a day has HUGE benefits:

  • Improve your memory and brain function
  • Protect against many chronic diseases.
  • Aid in weight
  • Lower blood pressure and improve heart health.
  • Improve your quality of sleep.
  • Reduce feelings of anxiety and depression.
  • Improve joint pain and stiffness.

To get maximum benefits from your exercise efforts, I recommend a combination of strength training, cardio and mobility.

If you are new to exercise, you will see significant benefits by merely walking more and just being more active throughout the day.

Bottom line, if you want to improve your health and set yourself up for a great 2021 - move your body.

 

 

When it comes to long term wellbeing, nutrition is key. They say ‘you are what you eat’ and I would have to agree. Yet, some people take more care of their cars than they do their own bodies.

When a car breaks down, you can take it to the garage and get it repaired or upgrade it for a new model.

However, when our bodies start to get sick or injured or even worse, gets a life-threatening disease, we start to pay attention. Unfortunately, by then it can be too late.

If we slow down enough to listen, our bodies are always communicating with us.

This is why rest is so important. Taking time out from our busy schedules to get outside in nature, read a good book or just sit and breathe, all help to reconnect to our bodies and check-in. We need to make sure we are taking good care of the one and only vehicle we will ever have in this lifetime.

Your health is your wealth. If you want to have an incredible 2021: honour your body.

 

 

Step 2 Take care of your mental and emotional health.

With 1 in 4 Australians currently suffering from a mental disorder, it is time to take a more proactive approach when it comes to our wellbeing.

What can you do to ensure you thrive from the inside out?

  • Make time for yourself. Self-love is not selfish. It is the cornerstone of a happy and healthy life. Run yourself a bath, do a yoga class, read a book, walk in nature. Whatever fills up your cup, ensure you do something every day that makes you feel good.

 

  • Meditate. Meditation has so many benefits and is one of the most proven ways to quiet the mind, reduce anxiety and connect to your deeper self.

When we meditate our body goes into a state of relaxation, our heart rate drops and we breath deeper. This stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which turns off the stress response in our body. Try a guided meditation for 5-10 minutes each day and allow yourself to relax and reconnect.

 

  • Move more. As mentioned above, exercise has been shown to decrease depression and anxiety. When we exercise, our brain releases endorphins and serotonin, which are our feel-good hormones. Try waking up and moving your body first thing. Not only will you feel great, but you will also have so much more energy and focus for the day ahead.

 

  • Take regular breaks throughout the day. On average, the human brain can only focus on a task for 90minutes before it needs a break. Set an alarm every 90minutes to stand up, stretch, breath, pour yourself a glass of water and reset. These small breaks in your day help to reboot you, and as a result, you will feel far more productive and get more done with ease.

 

  • Fill your mind with goodness. Read a good book, listen to a good podcast (check out The Mind to lead and The Body to Lead 😉) and limit the amount of time spent on social media or checking the news. Continue to learn and develop yourself in 2021; your future self will thank you for it.

 

 

Step 3 Surround yourself with like-minded optimistic people

Who you surround yourself with is who you become. If you are around people who are always moaning and complaining about all the excuses of why they can't change or go after their dreams that will eventually rub off on you.

The saying goes, ‘misery loves company’, so if you are ready to make 2021 your best year yet then ensure the company you keep makes you feel good, inspires and supports you. 

If you notice the people in your life are bringing you down, then look for local meetups in your area focused on any topics that sound of interest or look for online communities.

Make it a goal in 2021 to find your tribe. Human beings are wired for connection, so let's make sure those relationships serve our highest selves.

 

Step 4 Accept that challenges will come, but we can always choose how we respond.

The final step of setting yourself up for a great 2021 is preparing for what's to come.

Accept that there will be more obstacles ahead as we continue to navigate this new world we are living in.

The great news is that once we accept this, we regain power. We put ourselves back in the driving seat as we learn not to grip the wheel so tight.

Remember there is a lot of things that we can't control, but we can always choose how we want to respond.

Take a step back, breathe and look at the bigger picture. Regain perspective as you focus on gratitude for what you have now. Gratitude is a great practice to adopt in 2021. Even in the darkest of times, there is always something or someone to appreciate.

A lot of people have this backwards (I admit I used to as well), saying things like I will be happy when…......

The problem with this approach is that we limit the amount of joy we feel day to day. So why not find ways to appreciate even the smallest of moments right now? 

It could start with your morning coffee, having a warm bed to sleep in, a car to drive, a healthy body, or simply, for just waking up and taking a full breath.

If you want to feel more joy and abundance in 2021, look at challenges as an opportunity to grow, focus more on what you can control and feel a deep sense of gratitude for all you have in your life now.

 

As 2020 draws to an end its time to get clear on what we want. 

Take a moment to ask yourself;

What would a great year look like?

What do you want to achieve?

How do you want to feel?

How do you want to look?

What kind of person do you want to become?

What new goals are you committed to? 

Make the decision right here and now to make 2021 the year of transformation.

The year you get in the best shape of your life both physically and mentally.

The year you learn how to manage stress and anxiety.

The year you feel more energised and joyful.

The year you wake up every day with a positive and optimistic outlook no matter what is going on around you.

The year you feel inspired and motivated daily as you work towards your dreams and visions. 

The year you set new goals and achieve them with ease.
